Baxter Performance TS-503-BK – cartridge-to-spin-on oil-filter conversion
The Baxter Performance TS-503-BK replaces the factory cartridge-filter arrangement with a direct 3/4-16 interface for a spin-on oil filter. It installs at the original filter housing, so it is not a remote oil-filter relocation system and does not require oil lines to move the filter elsewhere in the vehicle.
TS-503-BK is the next-generation replacement for TS-501-BK. It is machined from 6061-T6 billet aluminium and uses Viton seals together with a spring-loaded docking collar. The design is intended to retain more oil downstream of the filter after shutdown, which Baxter states can support faster oil delivery and pressure build-up at the next start.
Key benefits
- 3/4-16 spin-on conversion – allows a vehicle-specific spin-on filter to be selected for the engine and available clearance.
- 6061-T6 aluminium and Viton seals – manufacturer-confirmed materials for the adapter body and sealing system.
- Spring-loaded docking collar – supports consistent seating in the factory filter housing.
- Schrader service function – enables the filter and part of the oil circuit to be evacuated with compressed air before removal.
- Made in the USA – as stated by Baxter Performance.
How does it work?
After the factory cartridge cap and filter element have been removed, the adapter is installed directly into the original housing. The service side then accepts a spin-on oil filter with 3/4-16 threads. Filter dimensions and specifications remain application-dependent, as the available space and engine requirements differ between vehicles.
Verified 4x4 applications
The table below lists selected applications supported by Baxter’s current vehicle pages. It is not the complete Toyota, Lexus and Scion fitment list.
| Vehicle | Model years | Engine | Notes |
|---|
| Toyota 4Runner N280 | 2010–2024 | 4.0 V6 | Requires a TRD or suitable aftermarket skid plate to provide filter clearance. |
| Toyota FJ Cruiser | 2010–2014 | 4.0 V6 | Requires a TRD or suitable aftermarket skid plate to provide filter clearance. |
| Toyota Tacoma N300 | 2016–2023 | 3.5 V6 | N400 models from 2024 require separate fitment confirmation. |
| Lexus GX 460 | 2010–2023 | 4.6 V8 | Listed by Baxter as a TS-503-BK application. |
Important: always verify the vehicle model, model year, engine, original filter housing and available service clearance before ordering. Baxter notes that some vehicles may require minor modifications to provide sufficient room for installation and maintenance.
Selecting a spin-on filter
A compatible filter must use 3/4-16 threads, but thread size alone does not confirm suitability. The filter diameter, length, bypass-valve characteristics and the requirements of the specific engine must also be considered.
- For the Toyota 4Runner 4.0 V6, Baxter lists WIX 51348 or Mobil 1 M1-102, or an equivalent filter.
- For the Toyota Tacoma N300 3.5 V6, Baxter lists WIX 51085 or Mobil 1 M1-204, or an equivalent filter.
- For the Lexus GX 460 4.6 V8, Baxter lists WIX 51085 or Mobil 1 M1-204, or an equivalent filter.
The final filter should always be selected from the current application data for the exact vehicle rather than by thread size or external dimensions alone.
Construction and materials
The adapter body is machined from 6061-T6 billet aluminium. Baxter specifies Viton for the sealing components and uses a spring-loaded docking collar to seat the adapter in the housing. A replacement body O-ring and docking-collar O-ring are available from the manufacturer under part number ORT-503-CKT.
Installation
Baxter’s instructions call for removal of the original cartridge cap and filter, cleaning of the exposed surfaces and removal or clearance of the original retaining clip where fitted. The adapter should first be test-fitted to select the Schrader-valve port. The body O-ring is then lubricated with engine oil, and the adapter is tightened with a 1-inch deep socket to 40 ft-lb, approximately 54 N·m.
A 3/16-inch hex key is used for the port plugs. Thread-sealing tape is required on the plug threads and is identified in the instructions as not included. After the selected 3/4-16 filter has been fitted, the engine must be run and the installation checked carefully for leaks. Installation of an oil-system component should be carried out by a workshop familiar with this type of conversion.
Schrader-assisted servicing
Before removing the filter, Baxter’s service procedure allows dry compressed air at 100 psi, approximately 6.9 bar, to be applied through the Schrader valve. The published sequence is 4–5 seconds of air, a 30-second wait and a second 3-second application. Always follow the current manufacturer instructions and do not exceed the specified parameters.
The process helps evacuate the filter and reduce the amount of retained oil, but it should not be described as completely drip-free. Baxter notes that a small amount of residual oil may still spill when a filter is mounted horizontally.

Frequently asked questions
Is TS-503-BK a remote filter relocation kit?
No. It mounts directly in the original filter housing. Baxter uses a separate product family for remote-filter installations.
Does it fit every Toyota or Lexus engine above 2.0 litres?
No blanket fitment assumption should be made. Compatibility must be checked by model, model year, engine and clearance. Only selected V8 applications are supported.
Can any 3/4-16 filter be used?
Thread size is only one requirement. The filter must also have suitable dimensions and operating specifications for the engine.
Does the adapter eliminate oil-pressure delay at every start?
Baxter describes improved post-filter oil retention and faster oil delivery at start-up, but no published measurement guarantees complete elimination of pressure delay in every engine.
Is filter removal completely drip-free?
The Schrader function helps evacuate the filter and reduce retained oil. A small amount of residual oil may still be present, particularly with a horizontally mounted filter.
