How to use recovery boards

First dig out the wheels and the ground ahead of them so the board can slide under the tread at as shallow an angle as possible. Push the board, teeth up, as far under the tyre as you can, in the direction of travel. Pull away in a low gear with gentle throttle – a spinning wheel melts and wears the teeth instead of finding grip. Once you reach firm ground, only stop where you will not bog down again, then walk back for the boards. In mud, tie a cord to the board so it is easy to find. Never stand behind the wheel during recovery – a board can be flung out from under the tyre.

Types and mounting

Plastic boards are light, flexible and rust-free; versions with metal teeth grip tyres better on ice and packed snow. Kevlar or roll-up boards take up less space in the vehicle. Recovery boards are not bridging ramps unless the manufacturer says they can be used that way. For transport choose a roof rack or rear door mount – the boards are always at hand and keep mud out of the cabin.
