Montaż namiotu dachowego na Jeep Wrangler JL – wszystkie możliwości i typy bagażników
Can you mount a roof top tent on a Jeep Wrangler JL without drilling? This article explains the most common mounting options, the difference between lightweight and heavy RTT setups, and shows proven roof racks and reinforcement solutions that work in real-world use.
Can a roof tent on a Jeep Wrangler JL be mounted only on a roof rack? Are there other options? Do you always need to drill into the roof? Do you need a dedicated tent specifically for the Jeep Wrangler? We’ll try to answer these and other questions in this article.
Is the Jeep Wrangler a good vehicle for camping?
The Jeep Wrangler has been one of the most popular off-road vehicles for years — and that translates perfectly into camping and overlanding use. It offers excellent off-road capability, a huge range of accessories, and can be easily upgraded into a mobile adventure base. Sleeping inside a Wrangler is sometimes possible, but not always comfortable (especially with two people and gear). That’s why many users choose a proven solution: a roof top tent for the Jeep Wrangler, which provides comfort, fast setup, and sleeping space “above” your cargo.
Can you install a roof top tent on a Jeep Wrangler?
Yes — the Wrangler is suitable for a roof top tent, as long as you use the correct mounting system. In practice, most Wrangler models can be prepared for an RTT (Roof Top Tent) by selecting the proper crossbars/rails and mounting brackets. The key is matching the setup to your specific vehicle version (2-door/4-door, hardtop/soft top) and your travel style: weekend camping vs. heavier overlanding.
Do I need a roof rack / rails for a roof top tent on a Wrangler?
Yes — to mount a roof top tent, you first need a base system, such as a roof rack, crossbars, or a platform. The tent needs a secure mounting point, and the whole setup must safely carry the load.
In short:
- without a roof rack there is no stable tent installation,
- the rack must match both the Wrangler model and the roof type,
- before buying, check load ratings and mounting method.
Which Jeep Wrangler is best for camping?
You can go camping with virtually any Wrangler — it all depends on your needs. If you plan more frequent trips and more gear (tent + luggage + for example an awning), newer versions and configurations are usually more comfortable, especially for heavier loads and longer trips.
The simplest selection logic:
- more space and stability comes with the 4-door Wrangler,
- the shorter version is also fine for weekend trips,
- with larger overlanding builds, total setup weight should be planned carefully.
How long does it take to install a roof top tent on a Wrangler?
Installation time depends on experience, tools, and mounting type. Typically:
- first installation (positioning, bolting, leveling): approx. 30–60 minutes,
- after that, once you know the process, it’s faster.
Daily tent use (opening and closing) after installation usually takes just a few minutes — one of the biggest advantages of a roof top tent compared to a traditional ground tent.
First question: which tent and for how many people?
If you choose a lightweight tent for up to 3 people, you don’t need additional reinforcements in a JLU. Basic gutter-mounted systems are sufficient.
Gutter mounting is used by Rival (you can switch to a drilled version at any time — reinforcement can be purchased and added later).
Another no-drill solution that can safely support a tent and three people is the Bison Gear roof rack.
Similar rack systems are also produced by Offrodmania, which we also offer.
The last gutter-mounted model suitable for a roof top tent is the Dee Zee rack. It features an unusual design — in practice, it’s actually two separate racks.
For heavier setups (4–6 person tents and heavier-duty constructions), we recommend drilling and reinforcing the roof structure to avoid surprises.
The Rival rack mentioned earlier is a good option here — reinforcement can always be purchased and added later.
Another rack with solid reinforcement is the ARB system.
Frontrunner also offers a front reinforcement in addition to drilling. Unfortunately, this option is not compatible if you have a snorkel installed.
Rhino Rack uses a drilled reinforcement system with additional support around the window. This unfortunately limits some options for mounting organizational accessories — similar to ARB as well.
There are also rail-style solutions for mounting a roof top tent, but in our opinion the Wrangler starts to look like a Passat :) — so we’re not including them here.
